Did The IRS Send You A Balance Due Notice Even Though You Already Paid Them?

The IRS is currently sending out balance due notices, known as a CP14 Notice, even though the taxpayer has already paid their tax!

I have a number of clients in this situation including those that submitted their payment on the IRS website using IRS Direct Pay. The payments for these taxpayers are not reflected in their IRS account so the IRS is issuing balance due notices which includes interest on the "unpaid" balance, even though it is not owed.

As with all IRS notices, it needs to be handled appropriately and responded to when necessary. Do not ignore it!

In the situation where the payment has already been submitted, the IRS should be contacted by phone and the appropriate documentation should be provided to verify that the payment has been made and to ensure that the taxpayer account is updated. If this is not done, the IRS collections division will continue to escalate their enforcement actions until the matter is settled.

If you, or someone you know, are in this situation, the IRS can be reached at 800-829-1040 to address this. Or you can call our office at 865-312-6238 and we can contact the IRS on your behalf to get this straightened out for you.
